Yes, LED bulbs have been a boom to the industry and their brilliance and performance is so much greater than even 5 years ago but they really have not been around long enough for consumer grade bulbs life ratings to be totally authenticated by the consumers using them
When LED’s first hit the mass market about 10 years ago their ratings were often 50000 hrs. A recent tour to big box mass merchants in our area shows that the ratings now are based on years but that is only if the bulbs are used for 3hrs per day. We did the math and it shows that most of the bulbs sold in the big boxes suggest a life of only 25000 hrs.
Most LED Bulbs have actual computer chips in their bodies to control certain aspects of the lighting mechanism. This is why companies such as Cree are well regarded because they are a chip manufacturer as well as an LED manufacturer
