Saving energy isn’t as hard as some may make it out to be. It’s actually one of the easiest things you can do, that is if you remember to do it. For example, unplugging electrionic devices when you are not using them like your home lamps, small handheld device charges, curling irons, electric shavers, kitchen blenders, and even the television. Lessening your carbon footprint is all about the little things, they do not necessarily have to be huge things. You are contributing to less pollution and even peaks in your electric bill you don’t want.

When it comes to light bulbs and choosing LED or others, of course, LED lights will be more energy efficient because they are 80% more efficient than traditional light bulbs. They actually work opposite of one another. Remember you could touch a light bulb and it would burn to the touch, well LEDs fixed that. 95% of the energy a LED puts out is converted to light and only 5% converted to heat whereas regular bulbs put out 95% heat and convert 5% to light – in return making less waste of heat and more of the energy we want of light. I felt the light bulb just go off in your head! Luckily these things have been around for quite some time but didn’t hit a big boom until the last 10 years.

In 1962 while working for General Electric, Nick Holonyak, Jr., invented the first visible-spectrum LED in the form of red diodes. Pale yellow and green diodes were invented next. Of course he was not new to the concept of light but discovered the different avenues he could take with the LED. At first Light-emitting diodes were very expensive, some $200 per piece. Thus, they were used as indicators only in highly professional laboratory equipment. Fairchild Semiconductors succeeded in the 1970s to reduce cost of individual LED to 5 cents by using planar process in production of semiconductor chips for light emitting diodes.

By using innovative methods of packaging and a planar process of chip production, the LED was made into a commercial product with variety of uses. Today, most to all LED are made in China marking Cree as one of the most innovative and technologically advanced makers of the LED bulb. Only thing is there are fairly not at consumer price. The chips and technology put into those bulbs are mostly for commercial use. Nonetheless, smaller brands do offer the same type of technology LED uses for the masses and we are here to offer them to you. LEDs will be around for a long time to come. We will gladly help you figure out where you fit on that spectrum.
