The Green Investment Report by Conserv-A-Store week ending 5-27-11

Here’s the Green Investments Report roundup for the week ending 5/27/11

There was a report by shorting trader extraordinaire Jim Chanos this week that shorting clean tech stocks is a smart move since renewable energy incentives are to be lessened as Federal and State governments have fewer dollars to throw at anything much less renewable energy

Chanos’s reasons to short solar stocks and First Solar in particular:
  • Austerity in Germany, Italy, and Spain
  • Solar cannot do baseload power – solar costs 3x coal and natural gas plants
  • Enormous insider selling – the chairman has gotten rid of most of his stock in the last year and a half
  • Lots of people are leaving (most of the executive suite)
Of course at the same time GE came out with a plan to greatly increase it’s solar footprint and there is more discussion about the switch to the smart grid or making electric transmission digital instead of analog which will allow energy savings.

We feel alternative energy(hopefully one day to be called main-stream energy) is here to stay. As we will provide in a future blog, despite the attempts by oil companies and traders to push oil prices up, global oil demand is quiescent. People are trying to do everything they can to spend their energy $ wisely and this includes favoring alternative energies.

The New Alternatives Fund and the First Trust Global Wind Energy Fund are the leaders of our portfolio currently having each increased over 5% since 1/1/11. Sadly many of the other holdings have lost ground since January ’11 since the general run up in the stock markets earlier in the year has subsided a bit.

Here’s a Portfolio snapshot as of May 27th:
