Here’s your Green Investments Report by Conserv-A-Store for the week ending 2/3/12
There has been a bit more Green(that is positive)movement in the charts for our holdings so far this year.
Winslow Green Growth Fund is showing a nice move in the first month of the year.

We would like to continue our collective education on trading carbon. Today we will focus on Terrapass.

Terrapass is a, “social enterprise that provides carbon offsetting products to individuals and businesses. Headquartered in San Francisco, California, TerraPass uses proceeds from member purchases to fund greenhouse gas reduction projects such as wind farms and methane digesters.”
Wikipedia

What is a carbon offset?

“A carbon offset is a certificate representing the reduction of one metric ton (2,205 lbs) of carbon dioxide emissions, the principal cause of global warming. Although complex in practice, carbon offsets are fairly simple in theory. If you develop a project that reduces carbon dioxide emissions, every ton of emissions reduced results in the creation of one carbon offset. Project developers can then sell these offsets to finance their projects.

There are hundreds of different types of carbon reduction projects. For example, a wind farm generates clean energy, which reduces carbon emissions from coal-burning power plants. In order to finance its operations, a wind farm can sell these reductions in the form of carbon offsets.” Terrapass website

Here’s a list of the projects TerraPass has been involved with recently

Here’s news on China agreeing to tax pollution in the next few years. As independent as the Chinese can be at times(thankfully not as independent as the N Koreans)they are a large part of the world economy, generally want the best for their people, and realize their pollution problem is sizeable we feel.

This is a really big deal. China has been difficult to deal with in the UN sponsored global warming debates but if it voluntarily installs some of the restraints that the Kyoto planned for then as the 2nd largest green house polluter it will put carbon control globally back on the map.
